I admire that Cianfrance wants to do a fathers/sons generational thing, but the pacing is languid and it sinks under its own earnestness.
I admired but didn't care for Blue Valentine either. It's now twice felt like Cianfrance is in love with giving us damaged but beautiful men who we should sympathize with and one-dimensional women we shouldn't. Lots of excuses for Acting with an A, but it never really clicks.
I dug the score, and I actually thought Cooper did terrific work here. Other than that, pass.
