... and then in the deposition he stops lying... but he doesn't have any moments with God before then... I just wonder what it all added up to. He finds sobriety certainly through his own guilt and his inability to sully Katrina's reputation forever after death... but is God unquestionably in that equation?
Did he say in his speech in jail God helped him sober up? If the only reference to God in his sober epilogue is a cross in his jail cell or something, that's a mighty subtle indication of religion's impact on Whip's decision considering how heavyhanded most of the rest of the film was. Zemeckis was *extremely* clear about Denzel not believing in God's power over humanity by having him state it aloud several times... I just didn't see the payoff. And I was waiting for the "God saves" message to bash me over the head, but I feel like it never came... at least not with the same force that the set-up came, y'know?
