Hey adults, here's your fun intelligent adult date movie for the spring.
Two best friends (Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt) start feeling out of the loop when their best friends, two couples (Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Chris O'Dowd), start having kids. They feel their friends' lives totally changing, but they understand the desire to have kids, so they decide to have a kid together, platonically.
The writing is sharp. The ground being covered isn't new (Having kids is hard! Marriages strain when a kid is introduced! etc.), but there are enough honest laughs and charismatic performances that it's definitely worth your while. Adam Scott is great in sort of a Paul Ruddish kind of role, and out of the supporting cast, I thought Chris O'Dowd (in a pretty good American accent) was the stand-out... hilarious and charming every time. Hamm and Wiig get to be a little less goofy and more grounded in a somewhat darker storyline, which was also really nice to see.
I just liked the voice of the writer. A simple story told and acted well. I found myself moved once or twice as well.
Westfeldt is going around to advance screenings around the country to talk about the film (she was there, to my surprise, last night in DC), and she's a very interesting and compelling atypical leading actress, but certainly a very strong writer. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and my date LOVED it. This one's for everybody.
Don't expect Bridesmaids though. It's not that. Far more honest, emotional, and grounded. Still plenty of laughs, just of a different variety. My movies: http://russellhainline.com My movie reviews: https://letterboxd.com/RussellHFilm/ My beer TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeertravelguide
