For the reason that you stated. I think they've put themselves in a great place to jump forward in time to what is now present day. Especially with the way the film ended with the implication that there may be other families going through similar circumstances (not that I'd love to be introduced to new people... but if they use talented filmmakers, I'm sure they could pull it off).
And it personally for me didn't feel contrived (at least, any more contrived than the gimmick is in the first place). I was too busy getting lost in the whole haunted house vibe and enjoying the atmosphere of the theater to think about the logic of the cameras in 1988.
