Its astonishingly clear to everyone who knows what they're talking about that Depp chases oscars
Smith - far less so, if at all. Even his sanctimonious roles have a Will Smith-mission: 'Happyness' was done because Smith personally liked the story of a black man's rise from rags to riches. He also felt that because that real story is about a bond between a man and his son, that it was better to have his own son in the movie(it worked great). That has everything to do with Will Smith, and nothing to do with the academy.
You just cannot say the same for Johnny Depp.
