FOH. There is an audience for heady, or as you put it "condescending", comedy in America and it's obvious given the success of the Daily Show, Colbert Report, hell The Soup or Best Week Ever; alot of us share cyncism and can get subtle, subject based jokes. As for the success of Simon Pegg or Ricky Gervais, give it time. Both are hugely popular and wealthy in England and only have one "american" movie under their collective belts; that Hot Fuzz or Shawn of the Dead jumped the ocean and did as critically as they did while gaining a cult following. Gervais did one movie that has made 60% of it's budget back in 3 weeks before going overseas, where it's bound to do great numbers later this month. And lets not pretend like he wasn't a hit in Night at the Museum, a box office smash that he will be appearing in the sequal to. Way to forget that one.
So, in short: Wait till This Side of the Truth and Night at the Museum 2 to pass judgement on Gervais.
Pegg, I don't think he's ever going to be more than a British version of a Broken Lizard member.
