Have only given it one spin so far... I like it, but...
where's Roy?
This P-fork review hits the nail on the head too hard, imo, but still makes a good point and something that was already lurking in my brain since the first album.
If anything, it feels more like a featuring Roy album than a Roy album. I'm not entirely convinced that's even a bad thing, but it is a bit confusing to me. I'm 100% in favor of producers acting as a prism for an artist's sound, and what comes out the other end may be totally different, refracted in unexpected ways. But ideally you'd still have the artist's feel -- and I'm not getting that here.
But like I said, first listen and overall I liked it, so maybe my mind will shift. It's also got me wanting to go listen to some old Ayers favorites and discover some stuff I haven't heard, too.
