"Christión's Ghetto Cyrano & other overlooked r&b/soul albums"
THIS AIN'T A CLASSIC ALBUM THREAD.
*clears throat*
Back in 2015, I came across Christion's Ghetto Cyrano in the bargain bin at Hyde Park Music in Chicago.
I played that joint on my drive back to Detroit and my mind was blown.
I was familiar with Christión vaguely because of "Your Love" (Remix) featuring Jay-Z from the Streets is Watching soundtrack but I didn't know much about them.
This rediscovery of sorts made me curious about other overlooked R&B/Soul albums that I might enjoy.
Give me some albums and name 3-5 joints I must listened to. I'm particularly interested in albums with little-to-no Billboard success.
Basically, don't state obvious shit or shit only casual R&B fans would list.
Albums can be from any era.
Let me start:
Christión's Ghetto Cyrano (1997) - Full of Smoke - Pull It - I Wanna Get Next to You (a superb Rose Royce cover) - Tonight (A Top 3 favorite of mine from this album)
Intro - Intro (1993) - Ecstasy of Love (My favorite and a CD Bonus Track) - Anything For You - Don't Leave Me - So Many Reasons *Side note: "Come Inside" is my least favorite despite its popularity. In fact, it 's not a favorite. Phonte sang an excerpt on the outro of the "Written All Over Your Face"Rude Boys cover on Zo! and Tigallo Love the 80's. The remix is better. Oh, and may Kenny Greene rest in peace.
And it's not an album cut, but the "Ribbon in the Remix" version of "Ribbon in the Sky" is the jam. I love how the vocal arrangement borrows from the Clark Sisters, "You Brought the Sunshine." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucXLVUgTwuA
Darien Brockington - Somebody To Love (2006) - Don’t Say Goodbye - Got What You Want - Come On Over - I Need You
Honorable mention goes to Eric Benet's A Day in the Life (1999), though it had more commercial success than those listed above.
