Mastering is a totally different thing than the slight mixing task you'd have to undertake to make your vocals shine through. I've noticed that nowadays a lot of folks use the word mastering quite loosely and claim to be mastering engineers when that is not the case. Mastering is normally only done for commercial releases and usually involves using VERY expensive gear that most of those claiming expertise in that area have never seen. But, as is always the case, cats will ALWAYS try to benefit from the ignorance of others.
It's kind of similar to how cats went from being artist managers to being CEOs of their management companies just because it made them sound more important.
