Eminem's more intricate flows sound too "patterned", as if he's decided on a flow to use and then put the words in. Regardless of how great the lyrics are, the rhythmic freedom Redman has just isn't there.
Not to sound corny and compare two guys who happened to be white in an artform mostly associated with black artists (that's REALLY not what I'm getting at) but I'd like to compare eminem to Dave Brubeck in that there's a stiffness in the rhythmic patterns that is compensated with complexity (intricate flows in Eminems case, strange time-signatures in Brubecks). It's just that it doesn't really compensate, at least not compared with people with a more effortless and fluid approach to rhythm. And again, this isn't about race; I have no horse in that, um, race...
