While not the first rap compilation series, it was one that gained a lot of attention in 1989 when it was released, due to promotion and placement at record stores. It was called RAPMASTERS, created by Priority Records, assembled in the same fashion as those old school K-Tel compilations because Priority was created from three former K-Tel employees.
Anyway, it was a quick and easy way to get some of the best songs, singles, and album tracks in one place without having to buy each individual record or tape. Volumes 1-10 were such a success, that Priority released another series, Volumes 11-15
