Without hit albums by LL and other pioneers, the success achieved by the later rappers wouldn't have been possible. Plus... You mentioned Illmatic and (?) Reasonable Doubt--two albums that took a looooong time to go platinum. Not to mention that the artists for those albums abandoned their more street-level style in search of crossover success that LL had already had for several years and several albums by that point.
