I'm not even a Musiq 'guy' like THAT. However, objectively pondering this topic shows there isn't really another male in R&B with his consistency and quality. He's easily been the most consistent by miles over this six album stretch.
Unlike a certain Robert Kelly, who is generally viewed as the best modern R&B has to offer, MS hasn't relied heavily on sexually aggressive, cheeseball songs without even a hint of subtly ( I like The Crotch On You? Feelin On Your Booty? Are you kidding me here?). The Neo Soul of his early years easily trumps the spanish guitar garbage of Kell's output at that time. MS also hasn't scrapped the lowest common denominator barrel like Kels has.
Unlike JT or Usher, he hasn't had to be propped up with the spotlight hogging super-duper-producers of the moment like Tim, Tunes, Lil John, etc.
Also unlike Usher, he hasn't had to leech whatever "hot" trend
Unlike T-Pain, he hasn't had to go the Seth Mcfarlain "let me just milk the living shit out of this gimmick" route with the autotune bullshit.
He hasn't overplayed the aria hand that virtually every last urban singer has used as a crutch. You know, the endless stream of "Aye!" and "Oh-Oh-Oh!" strings that permeate every song out beacause nobody knows how to write lyrics anymore.
He also hasn't had to jump on the hip-pop-house bandwagon to remain relevant.
Don't run up with your wack ass Tre Songs nonsense. Don't bring Ne-Yo into this discussion, because he doesn't have a single album that can stand with any of MS's albums from end to end.... let alone a catalog of solo albums that matches MS's SIX in the last decade.
Don't get me wrong- MS has recycled afew cadences. He's suffered from a certain 'sameyness' at times. His sound hasn't deviated too far from his debut sound. He does, however, got the love song down pat. His songs aren't even "bigger" than the guys I've named.
What I'm saying is, pound for pound, he's delivered by far the most consistent stretch of quality albums of any male R&B artist over the same time period. Hearing synths on an MS song is actually a treat, because they aren't being used in the same vanilla paint by numbers way that everyone else uses them. Musiqinthemagiq is a fine example of that.
Oh, I know. Ne-Yo writes and produces for others. The Dream runs the writing/production scene. Tre Songs CHARTS, YO!!! Usher Makes Love Up In The Club! JT had arguably two of the very best albums in the genre. Kells is Billboard juggernaught. Whatever.
None of those dudes has a six album stretch like Musiq.
