>Janet has had a nice respectable career but even in her prime >she wasn't as big as Madonna
Wasn't as big with who? And why?
>If you want to see black artists who were at Madonna's level, >two of them came out of the eighties alongside her: Michael >and Prince.
Both men... somewhat androgynous non threatening men at that. But beyond that the sheer fact Madonna in ranked along side those two is telling in and of itself. We can play the "which one of these things is not like the other" game if you wish.
>It's been a while since a black woman had anything like >Madonna status though. Mariah is probably closest.
Closest in shade too
>But to be >fair, no white women have that status either. We can talk >about Gaga if she's still doing it in two decades, but for now >she's just aspiring. Madonna's the only female star in her >weight class since she came on the scene - that really says it >all.
Every era has had them... From Judy Garland to Barbra Streisand there has always been a dominate white female star. All you need to do is look back at how they were revered compared to their black female counterparts if you want to really compare. If Gladys Knight had gotten Streisand level love then maybe you could make an argument.
Really man a lot of the shit I said in the opening post was over the top... but to act like race isn't playing a role in how female pop stars are handled is pretty damn naive.
