When he was having that super run between '83 - '87, a current 34 year old would have been about 4 at the earliest. Is that old enough to develop a serious appreciation for the music? I dunno.

I get what you're saying but the landscape, as we all know, has significantly changed with respect to how music is brought to the masses. So, it's not impossible to understand how so many people really are just discovering and getting into his music after his death.
