And it is true that there may be a higher ratio of women who try to extort money from athletes in one form or fashion than the members of society who aren't high profile athletes.
But as a casual follower of these cases, it seems rare that rape is alleged by lovers of athletes all and it seems that most of the athletes are found not guilty. So, I don't know where the line of thought that fans develop which says that women are after an athlete's money. Or at least women seek out athletes in the same way that athletes use their status to have sex with a lot of women who are out of the league of many average men.
It is a crime, an under-prosecuted crime, to make a false accusation.
The law ought to be followed as much as that law is fair and offers criminal justice to citizens. But again as someone who doesn't closely follows these cases, the way the court settles cases of sexual assault seems like women have to bear too much emotional and social burden in order to find justice. That's even more troubling since rape and other sexual assault is thought to be under-reported.
