A parent's influence only goes so far...
Unless someone is blessed with a highly motivated and self aware kids, chances are that kid is going to be highly influenced by the behavior of his/her peers.
Sending them to a good school-private or public-greatly increases the odds that peer pressure will encourage (or at least not hinder) their chances to get a good education. Going to school where kids skip,don't care about their grades and generally fuck around is tough for any kid to overcome.
