"Life in Pittsburgh"

Going to be a professor at Pitt in the fall and will be moving to Pittsburgh toward the end of the summer. Currently living in DC. Never been to Pittsburgh.

Folks have told me to consider living in Larimer, East Liberty, and Shadyside. Are there other neighborhoods I should be looking at? I'm a single dude in my early thirties looking to rent. My favorite neighborhoods in DC are East Capitol Hill and SW and I'm looking for a place that's sort of like those in terms of being reasonably low key and having a mix of young professionals and old folks that have lived in the neighborhood forever. Would like to live close enough to the university that the commute isn't crazy.

Also interested in what the black professional scene is like. Is there anything equal to the Grits&Biscuit/Afropunk/CBC crowd?

To be honest, without kids, we'd live in Lawrenceville or East Liberty

Pittsburgh's hills will likely be your biggest physical adjustment.
