"on: the decline of minorities in skilled trades"

This is purely an observation...

Growing up in Detroit the workforce in this city was all about the auto industry (obviously). The majority of this city is three generations deep in working in the plant. However, now the plants hire and layoff at an increasing rate, coupled with corporate politics and a piss poor education system that lacks in career development, the generation behind me don't see working at the plant as a long term career. There used to be a school here that taught aerospace science but they lost their accreditation due to mismanagement. So students coming out of DPS schools don't even see aviation as a career because this school that I'm at now is so far outside of the city and a lot of people don't have the resources or even the mindset to even travel outside of the city.
We push our kids to go to college but why aren't we pushing our kids to go into the skilled trades. I thought about this because the number of Black students in my program is low and also because there is a high school automotive competition going on in here today and all of the students competing are White. What can done, if anything, to get minority students to look at a skilled profession as a viable career option? Is it even worth it?
