everything is set up like a pap then they put vinegar on your cervix, if you have any lesions, it turns them white and the doctor takes a sample. He puts a little medicine where he takes the biopsy (it's brown so you might spot a little after) and then it's over. The amount of biopsies depends on the amount of lesions but it's usually 2 snips, no more than 4. You may feel cramping after but it's not on the same level as cramping during your period.
It's not THAT bad but if its' the only thing you've been through, I can see how one would think of it as traumatizing. But I see women who have had several colpos and children and are like "this is nothing, get it done...do I cough now?"
Coughing makes it easier and less painful when they take the tissue sample.
