changes the pronunciation. I can't even describe how that would work for "gnat", but for salmon my tongue is lower in my mouth when vocalizing the "a" sound than if the "l" wasn't in the word. I absolutely NEVER pronounce the "l", but it's like my tongue is preparing to make an "l" sound but doesn't, and in my mind that changes the sound of the short "a" in "salmon".
