I think he's in a position of trying to sell a book but he's way too conscious of the criticism that he's a movement profiteer.
So dude is in a catch 22. Sale my book and make profit or let my book flop and maintain some semblance of sincerity. So he tried to kind of weasel his way through that dilemma. It's in bad taste. (Of course, we could all be wrong about his book deal and he could be telling the truth).
