Folks in the middle of the madnesswanted criminals put away but they also wanted investment in their communities (and not just the real estate via gentrification) that would improve living conditions and provide alternatives to a life of crime.
So it's not quite revisionist history... more like simplified history. And it doesn't necessarily absolve politicians of the time unless they can show that they were addressing the issues from multiple perspectives, not just being more harsh with criminals.
