I have also seen tons of rave reviews, and admit I do like it, but can't say whether it's hype or not. I like it better than regular Jameson, but do I like it more than, say, Black Bush or Jameson Caskmates? Or does that '12 Year Single Pot Still' label carry some weight to it? I'm not entirely sure. I haven't really dove in to Irish whiskey too much, so distinguishing between an blend and a single pot still whiskey is beyond my palate.
I caught my bottle on sale for about $45. I would get another bottle at that price and keep it on my shelf, but I can't say I'd go out of my way to get a bottle of Redbreast.
