"I Used to Love H.E.R. - is there a dialogue in hip hop?" Fri Jul-14-17 04:58 PM by double negative
Kind of a thought experiment and this might not make sense, but...
After seeing the video for 4:44 I wonder if Jay Z is also talking about hip hop
Further, I've been wondering if there has been a long standing tradition/canon of holding a response to Common's 'I Used to Love H.E.R."
I was thinking this with Drakes 'Hotline Bling'
So, without going to deep into it, have rappers been making a reference to hip hop in songs where a woman is the central subject. I wonder if its a bit of metaphorical thinking at play.
I can't prove this but this is something I can't stop thinking about.
I know call and response references between songs and rappers has always been a thing so it strangely makes sense in my brain
