The climate has to shift from the binary choice. Both sides have representatives, voters, and financial supporters in them right now that don't entirely agree with the direction of those parties. The splintering of both parties has to happen and will happen.
The public has already begun to shift away from both parties. If Trump was denied the Republican nomination, he could've ran on the ballot as an independent and he still would have taken a huge chunk out of that electorate. A Trump/Sanders ticket would've been the best-case scenario for that election.
Once the GOP finds out how to use Trump up and marginalize him, that alt-right will be pushed back out of the spotlight. When they do, the GOP will break up some more.
People have to see that that reality is becoming more and more plausible with every term. It's not about the Dems vs. GOP anymore. Both sides are actively trying to quell newer, more brash movements while one-upping one another. It's only a matter of time. The right people have to be in place and on the same page by then. ---------------------------------------
