I've had time to flesh out thoughts. First I was being petty with my sketches. I've been dealing with irritation for five days and a delayed flight will do that. So apologies for coming at you.
That said I disagree with most of your premises and criticisms of
My approach is more that, the things that are being broadcast on the front of a convention are average. They look like knock offs of things I've seen in the 90s. And with photoshop, vector drawing, the ability to compare and hone skills; I don't feel that being just ok should be a headliner.
Anyways. My problem with the cover has nothing to do with the quality of content. Only the art. His stance is unrealistic. The shoes are poorly drawn. The text is clearly word warp from ms office. The black shaded guy looks like a sketch from word up magazine. The shading on the floor and horizon is completely off as well.
The black comic scene is still fledgling and I compare it to the early punk scene. Very diy. I've been to punk fests and they always headline the art more so than the artist. So when I'm looking at something that's putting names above the medium, I'm disappointed. Because it suffocates the room.
As a culture we always say we have to work twice as hard as the rest. But when we put up average work, why should I clap to that? It's not groundbreaking to make a comic anymore. It's easier than it's ever been.
As far as the audience of the book and lack of representation. I agree. But that doesn't make the art good or his effort less sincere. He can be both earnest and below quality.
