Monte sued Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin for $1 million dollars and won, but Lear blackballed him and ran him out of the business as payback. Apparently, Monte hasn't worked in Hollywood since.
If that's what Lear was capable of, I'm surprised that John Amos couldn't see that he'd be kicked off the show.
