I could almost say the same about Janet Jackson. When Janet came out with Control, nobody was checking for her airy voice and limited voice range. They were checking for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' production that made Control legendary, and one of the most important albums in music history.
Plus Janet Jackson was a top notch dancer and performer which made up for her singing. As far as singing, Janet Jackson was not in the same lane as her contemporary Whitney Houston.
