During the Apple.com live event today, HBO CEO Richard Plepler confirmed an enticing rumor. Yes, Winter is coming, but so is HBO’s standalone streaming service and it will be here in time for Game of Thrones. The announcement was accompanied by this all-new trailer for Game of Thrones Season 5.
For a monthly fee of $14.95, viewers will be able to get HBO content without having to pay for an entire cable package (or scamming their mom’s HBOGo password). The service, called HBO Now, will premiere in partnership with Apple to make AppleTV one of the launch partners for the service, no word yet on whether the partnership is exclusive.
As for the all-new trailer, there are plenty of visual delights. We get the live-action version of that great Tyrion/Drogon poster, the complete “break the wheel” speech from Dany, plenty of new footage of Jonathan Pryce as Cersei’s antagonist the High Sparrow, and a glimpse at, oh yes, another Game of Thrones royal wedding. Those always end well.
Game of Thrones Season 5 premieres April 12 on HBO, HBOGo, and HBO Now.
