You live here too? I grew up in Ohio myself. (Springfield)
Fortunately wolf spiders in the house aren't that common...maybe once a year. Most memorable being after my wife finished washing her hands one crawled out of the drain. Amazingly she took it in stride like your girl does. They can get massive (size of a hand) though so killing them is a mess. I usually try to catch and release.
Unfortunately black widows are really common outside our house so I have to double check everything I grab.
A panther was living in the woods across the street. My roommate was taking the trash out at night and it was standing in the street a few feet away watching before walking back in the woods. It's been a few years since anyone's spotted it lately though.
A friend had a bear walking down the street in her neighborhood. That was a mile away. Probably the same area you're thinking of. (The Shores)
On a more peaceful note there's an area called porpoise point where I've been splashed by dolphins they were so close to shore. I probably see them there about 50% of the time. (Usually not that close though.)
