"Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine. Anyone up to discuss?"
I pulled this album out last night, and frankly, it amazed me...made me realize yet again how much untapped potential there is for musicality even in these cold, hard synths and sequencers all around us. And samples, and live instrumentation, which is more and more used to just create loops.
And, the levels were wide open...a far cry from the smushing boost cats typically apply to cuts these days. There was room to breathe, and dynamics, and all sorts of stuff that seems to have disappeared (except in like Bjork's stuff, or Thom Yorke's).
Anyone have a track off Pretty Hate Machine they particularly like or dislike, from the production standpoint? Any specific elements that impressed or disgusted you?
Does this post belong in the Lesson? I'd like it to happen in the more open atmosphere over here, with the music itself as the focus.
Incidentally, this link might provide some interesting tidbits on musical form as we generally know it:
