DISCLAIMER: If you read that title and the first thing you thought of was computer games, leave this post and carry your ass to Hi-Tech. No offense, the game was great and all. But this is not for you.
However!
If you read that title and the first thing you thought of was Chief Lynn Thigpen (RIP), Lightning Rounds, and ROCKAPELLA, then congratulations, gumshoe. Your youth was well spent.
What a great show.
Parents...teachers... young at heart- is there anything like this in today's children's programming? It was fun, it was competitive, and it somehow managed to make geography seem cool... I so desperately wanted to be on that show even though my Geography skills were incredibly weak. I knew I'd sure as shit never stand a chance during that last round, where you had to place red markers over the countries that corresponded with the given clues... And if the marker didn't light up, you were totally screwed! At times this show was almost too much to watch (In fact, IMDB claims that one episode went unaired because during said round, a kid fell and broke his arm. Or maybe it said he died. I forgot. Either way--- Intense!!)
So there you have it. One of the greatest kids' TV shows of all time. One of the greatest game shows of all time. Two great tastes that tasted great together.
