So, say, you know of a person and so far you know he/she likes Magnolia, Memento, Hoop Dreams, and In the Mood For Love. You're gonna write them off and never take their taste, opinions, and recommendations seriously just on the basis of Memento and Magnolia? The same goes in a case in which you only know that he/she likes Memento and Magnolia before you hear any of their other favorites? For all you know, you talk to them more and these might be some of their favorites:
The Fog of War The Perfect Candidate Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Half Nelson Pulp Fiction The Usual Suspects Adaptation Hoop Dreams Happy Together The Thin Blue Line Ghost World In the Mood For Love Traffic Rushmore Blue Velvet
^Those mixed in with others you slightly dislike or strongly dislike.
He/she could potentially turn you on to other great stuff. More often than not, I just think people's tastes are far too complex (i.e., no rhyme and reason), if they're being earnest, to dismiss them based on a few movies. You can browse the thousands of film-related lists on the internet or in magazines and find that people like stuff that you'd think they wouldn't like/love based on their other choices.
Don't you think it's close-minded or rash that someone who, say, hates Adaptation writes you off and not check out Hoop Dreams or Happy Together b/c it's coming from a list from someone whose taste and sensibility has Adaptation as a favorite?
That is not to say, though, that there are never gonna be cases where for the most part you and another person just have totally different sensibilities and taste.
