Aki Kaurismaki "The Man w/o a Past" (Kaurismaki doesn't stray from his tried-and-true formula of the human condition on a proleteriat/pedestrian level, but is at the top of his game here; tangentially, there's a Leningrad Cowboys DVD box set coming out next year from Sandrew Metronome Sweden)
Richard Massingham "How to be Eccentric: The Films of" (an amateur filmmaker, physician-by-training, dead some 50 years; although I wouldn't necessarily concur w/ the praise assigned to Massingham by Henri Langlois, nevertheless there is a genius at work in this collected series of shorts, soon to be issued on DVD via the BFI in the UK. Some claustrophobic elements, wry humor, good fun - retrospective toured North America this year after the initial "rediscovery" of his films at the 2002 Bologna Film Festival)
