33. "I really like his debut, Element of Crime" In response to In response to 32
It's weird and kind of hypnotic and doesn't really match his style in his more recent films, but it's good all the same. It makes you feel a little weird and out of place, but it's not like totally painful like those other two movies.
Also, if you can watch the Criterion DVD edition there's a 50 minute documentary about him that is totally worth watching -- really shows how weird and crazy he is. (He's really weird and crazy, if you couldn't guess.) I'd recommend both films (same DVD, though).
I've heard The Idiots is good (his only Danish language film, too) but I haven't gotten around to watching it.
Most of his other stuff is not distributed well, or maybe not even released for all I know. That documentary on the Criterion DVD talks about all his work pre-Dancer though, and he's got a few more films which just seem determined to mess with the viewer in there, too.
