I thought he was also pretty good in that movie. Though according to "Easy Riders and Raging Bulls" a lot of that performance was enhanced in the editing room. Still, he did well playing a physcially scarred vet at the end of his rope. I think he may have been the first actor to win an Oscar for playing someone who "conquered adversity," either mental or physical. It set off a trend that still follows the Oscars today.
