it's easy to make a film that makes people feel awful. The question is whether the film is also culturally and emotionally relevant. The Deerhunter, to me, is far more a product of its particular moment in time. It shook me up a lot when it first came out, and it seemed like an indictment of Vietnam at the time -- but at the time there was VERY little being said or written about that war. It was this country's dirty secret that was out in the open but not talked about.
