i loved it.

first off, conrad hall's cinematography, to me, made the movie even better than it would have been on its own. the story, the acting, the score, etc, was all there, but the one element that pushed it over the top is the cinematograhy. the darkness that characterized the first half gave way to a lightness in tone, and spirit, which propelled the story during the second half. a lot of the set direction had me and this one guy behind me going 'oh, wow' every few scenes, and, since the movie took place in 1931, all the clothes looked bad-ass as fuck. the long jackets and hats makes for an imposing silhouette.

the movie did drag a bit, but on the whole, it went by at a pretty good clip. everyone acted well, even the little kid, but i felt that the movie belonged to paul newman, even if his role isnt that big.

its good times. best movie i've seen this year (not saying much, really, but i really liked minority report, too)
