that being said you could clearly understand why people came to the conclusion.

Actually... the way the story worked (and your site was wrong) was that Phil watched another man watch another man drown. Since the man didn't help the man... eventually he sent him front row tickets to his show... during the song, as legend has it, he sang the song to him.
