Follow your own damn example then, EACH One of those groups comes here and makes a serious effort to make it ON THEIR OWN! They focus on education, they learn how to make money, they build Businesses, they go into fields that pay well.

I'm the son of West Indian Immigrants and I know how they got isht done. It wasn't because of people giving back, it's because they set a goal and reached it. Self Reliance means that you DON'T need a celebrity to help you to succeed.

I have friends and business associates from each one of those groups you mentioned, those people succeeded with the help of their families and no one else. They try to help one another, but they help those who are already in a position to help themselves. E.g. You come to interview at company I work for, I see you waiting for an interview.....take you aside and tell you what to say. When you hired, I mentor you and help guide you along the path to success.

That's how it works, that's what fellow West Indians try to do for me and that's what I see other people from those groups doing.

Self Reliance means the process starts with you, community help means that the community helps those who are already in the process of helping themselves.

It's not begging you dolt, I speak virtuously because I know how to Make Money and I know how to make Businesses work. IT's My damn job! Poor Black Communities have no economic strength, it does no good to build a Business in a neighboorhood that can't support it. SOOOO, to truly build wealth and to bring money into the Black Community....we need to build our Businesses outside the community as well as inside.

The ethnic groups you mentioned know that, so they'll work with anyone who can make them money......that they can bring into their families/communities.

The money has to come from somewhere, the community can be healtheir economically if we bring it from elsewhere. A Business that only sells to Blacks won't make as much money as a Business that sells to everyone.

Please come back when you have the foggiest idea of what it takes to run a successful Business.

Did you hear a word I said? Obviously not. This issue is so much larger then Supermarkets, (particularly since they have profit margins of around 3-5% and starting a Business to fund other ventures....is a bad idea in the short to medium term). Shaq starting a supermarket won't change much, particularly since Supermarkets don't change much and ONE supermarket isn't going to change the economic make up of a neighboorhood.

People have to get educated and get high paying jobs
People need to learn to invest
People need to learn to buy homes, and manage their money.

Making $12.50 at a supermarket just makes things easier, but it's not the road to economic empowerment.

TO turn around Poor Communities you either:

Get rid of the poor people
Teach the poor people to build their economic strength, so that they are no longer poor.

Thinking that an athlete building a supermarket can solve this, is simplistic and Naieve.

I don't owe you shit...if I owe anyone, I owe the people who died to get me the rights I have now. The Same rights you enjoy, what I do with those rights is my Business. I earned everything I have and you had NOTHING to do with it. In Honor of those before me, I should do something for the less fortunate as well. But it's something I should do......it's not a debt.

Unless you helped me Build what I have, unless your support made it possible.......I don't owe you got a damn thing. This is what irks me, successful Blacks who rise out of the Ghetto or ones that were Born middle class like myself......build their lives with the help of their families (and a few others) and with their own hardwork and sweat. Then folks in the "community" who didn't contribute a damn thing, want to take credit for and start talking about what they're owed.

Shit, if anyone owes anything it's you. People died so that Blacks could have the opportunity to succeed, if you're not taking those opportunities or creating them....then you're the one who owes somebody.

Everyone is born with a different lot in life, some good some bad. BUT, it's ultimately up to you to succeed on your own. Help is good....but regardless it's up to you.

The Black Community will never elevate itself if it keeps looking for a savior.

I'm not the biggest Jesse Jackson fan, but he has been doing some significant things with Black Churches all over the country to help them teach their members the importance of home ownership, savings and how to build wealth.

The thing is, it starts with the individual.....we're all responsible for making our lives a success. The idea that a great saviour will come down and save the Ghetto is ludicrous and counterproductive, people need to get up and just do it. Not all will succeed, most won't.....but that's the way it's gotta be.

All the help in the world won't matter unless Blacks are already doing what they can as individuals to elevate.

Poor Misguided Naieve child, most successful Blacks aren't athletes or entertainers. A lot of them could teach things like:

Budgeting
Getting their kids into school
Savings
Life Skills
Starting a Business
Investing
Tips to getting a better job
Home Ownership

Need I go on?

Knowledge is what separates the rich from the poor. For example, let's say you have a poor Black family...2 kids...Mom and Dad work...barely bring in $25k/year.

Let's say I work with them on Job Skills, I teach Mom computer skills and how to conduct herself professionally. Eventually, I coach her into a secretary's job where we now makes more then both of them used to make together.

I work with Pops...teach him job skills as well, manage to get him a Job at UPS...(a very minority friendly company) now he's making more then they used to make together.


Now that they have some money, I help them move to a nice area. It's got better schools for the kids, and it's quieter...maybe even cheaper. I teach them how to budget, live below their means and sock money away. I teach them about dollar cost averaging and how to work on buying a house.

I tell them to take full advantage of their company's 401k plans, and of the tuition reimbursement. It's rough with two kids, but we find ways to get around that..and they go back to school.

I talk to the Kids too, tell them the importance of education and how important it is now...even though they're in middle school to start preparing for college.

10 years later, let's look on them again:

They've built a 6 figure investment portfolio, they've bought a house and are considering buying up a cheap house where they used to live and rennovating it so that a family like them will have a good place to live. Pops got a degree in Organizational Mgt. and has a nice job at UPS, Moms got a degree in book keeping and works as an accountant for a local Business. Their joint income exceeds 6 figures.

Kids are about to go to school, but that's not a worry...between savings, state schools and loans.....they're aiight.

Get the picture?

What's better? What I mentioned or a rich Black person starting a Supermarket?

Kids need to grow up and learn to do for self, nor should throw away their own security...because who is going to help you up then?
