love poem for charlie

eyes closed...i see you whisper
"i love you" to a stranger
and mean it
smoothe bourbon cascades down the back of my insides
guiding me with its fingertips
til i sway with you

the vibrato beckons me
to a slow crawling embrace
and we slow dance
my head perched against your shoulder
your fingertips melt into my spine
and we stand there gazing into the music

charlie
we are timeless
fermented love
stinking up the night sky with our song
flirting in smiles
rocking side to side
holding me like a lost child
that you, charlie, are bringing back home

interlocking fingers
your alto is superman
and i walk with you in the heavens
flying across cities,
it is winter and we are warm
butterfly kisses migrating south

i inhale
reach out for you, charlie
and you take my hand
leading me around the ballroom floor
in billows of smoky music
softly caressing my cheek
you take me there charlie
you walk with me
and we dance
like grandparents celebrating silver
renewing their vows
while everyone stands in wonder and joy

and we dance yardbird
i become a dirvish
close my eyes
fall into you

and surrender
