I know career longevity and economic survival are both goals. Is it better, given (only for my purposes)two paths, to be brilliant early and establish your own chamber that others visit ala the Artist or Carlos or Aretha, or to build a body of work like some who issue vital product late into life ala a Shirley Horn or Joe Henderson.
It feels like the money flows more quickly to the first group but only a few talented souls can sustain the audience's interest beyond the "here today, gone today" level.
This second, larger, group may not be household names outside of music lovers and they may have to tour continually, going overseas quite a bit, etc. But they still get to make music and a living. I don't know how they're living so that is a point I would concede given contrary evidence. Many also deal with artistic droughts but on it's face it seems a way to accomplish several goals. Prospering and making music doing it.
thanks for the conversation,
bc
"I draw a crowd like an architect"-Rakim
