(To the guy who made the first comment)I just checked out Bilal's song on the Love & Basketball soundtrack. The song is tight as hell. Yes, he sounds SIMILAR to D'Angelo, but is that a bad thing? No it's not. In my opinion D'Angelo sounds SIMILAR to Marvin Gaye and Prince. When I first heard the Brown Sugar album D's backgrounds reminded me of Marvin .Maxwell also sounds SIMILAR to Marvin and Prince. There's a big difference between SIMILAR and EXACT. The point is no music is completely original (unless you're talking about the primitive blues that were being sung during the Middle Passage or the pioneers such as Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, etc.--but I expect that most folk don't know anything about that--I think you do ?uest). Every artist borrows ingredients from the greats that came before him/her, but a good artist (such as D'Angelo) takes those borrowed ingredients and makes their own special stew (not a copycat version).
