problems on a program which was optimized for the vast majority of purposes** (we hypothetical here, i know dcforums is anything but), and we consequently didn't want to mess with the base code, however, we had a significant use case for which the program logic was COMPLETELY inefficient, one potential workaround strategy would be to just insert a switch (on whatever combination of variables that comprised the use case from hell), and write separate logic just for that.
^^ prolly not my worst run on sentence, evar, but pretty respectable for ramblability.
anyway, if reply count > 1000, stop loading the entire poast and just load the headers (like in the old, "view all" days).
and then you can click the reply that you want and go right to just that text, with the option of loading the whole shit.
which is what you did (more elegantly than i propose).
but the thing is, i don't think it would be that hard, per se, to make the current forum code more efficient. and i think you and others have poasted before that it wouldn't be hard to remake the board s/w from scratch. the problematic part, i think, would be in making it backward compatible OR running a data conversion on the archived/existing poasts so that they would conform to the new standard.
zooming out and looking at it from the business / client perspective, though, they'd be mad hesitant to go with, say, Triptych Forums 1.0 - not that they wouldn't be very impressed w/ your capabilities, but because they'd be beholden to you in the future for updates/breakfix/y3k shit, etc. unless part of the RFP stipulated all types of transparency and overdocumentation of the code such that any old body using xyz programming language could maintain what you build.
being visionary, though, i would pay you to do some shit like that.
because you could do some old next level ish like having okartists poasts echo to twitter, or vice versa, and really create something (more) unique in the industry. because ?uest:okps :: ???:theyfans
the content (artist interaction) is the value-add, and if they had a way to really capture and capitalize off of that, it would be on.
i mean, folks is clocking hundreds of thousands of dollars off blogs and adsense? is okp seeing that level of paper off of board.okayplayer.com? if not, why? cuz we a demographic full of window shoppers? or they just haven't found the right business model yet?
i really think that if they allied a one of a kind 'product' (okayartist/fan interaction) with a one of a kind interface (boards 3.0), they could stand to cake a lot more off of this instead of having it flirt back and forth between the revenue and expense category (from reading between the lines of poasts from ?uest, dan and others over the years).
and this is all love. i dig the place the way it is. but i'm an idea person, so i can't help but muse on these things every now and then.
i mean, fuckatwitter. we been talking about this for a few years now.
peace & blessings,
x.
