"I find Biz Markie's 'Just a Friend' very misogynistic." Mon Aug-27-12 07:31 PM by Orbit_Established
For one, the "you got what I need" claim in the refrain is possessive and conflicted.
What exactly does she have that he "needs?"
I think the sensitivity on display in the song is manipulative and insincere.
Clearly his "needs" are purely sexual and all of the associated emotion is related to this "need."
Secondly, at no point during the song do we learn Mz. blah blah blah's perspective on the matter. It seems possible, for example, that Biz Markie was actually the platonic friend and that she was actually in a relationship with man X.
Given Biz Markie's reaction, I'm more inclined to think that the song is demonstrative of a delusional, possessive man who misunderstood a woman's intentions.
Instead of a critical self-examination, we get a soliloquy of male paranoia, where Biz childishly warns all men to be wary of their female partners' male friends.
