"Help me understand FireWire"

Here's the deal:

I've got a PowerMac G4, just bought a external DVD/CD driver because my internal CD drive is busted (worn out to the extent that it's not worth repairing, basically).

The external drive is connected to the computer via a firewire cable. But everything is plugged in, and nothing is happening. The external drive doesn't even show up on my computer's desktop, anywhere. So I'm stuck.

Is there some way I can check to see if the FireWire on my computer is enabled? I'm thinking either it's off, or the firewire connection on my computer is broken.

Any help you can give I appreciate.

peace, thanks
