Sales update time! Sony announced today that the company has sold 21.3 million PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide, a figure that by February is probably a bit higher, as their tally only runs until December 31, 2008.

But 21.3 million is the number they gave, so it's the number we're running with. Not disclosed was a regional breakdown of how many units have been sold in each area.

Looking at the number, it's important to note that Sony - unlike many other companies - counts actual sales, not just units shipped to retail.

Interesting. Looks like the PS3 is still selling faster than 360, despite the price difference in the two systems.
