read about forwarding ports:

www.portforward.com

It looks a little daunting at first glance (lotsa stuff to read), but it's not that hard to do, and it will most likely make a huge difference.

My download rates went up from a shaky 70 kb/sec to anywhere in between 80 and 700 kb/sec.
