I don't know if you're serious or not. As far as I can tell, her goal was not to make the ipod "act like an ipod," her goal was to turn it into a mass-storage device that can be read both in windows and in OSX. The only way to do this is to format it into FAT32 (correct me if I'm wrong, you're the OSX expert). How should she have gone about doing that?
